The ATR2100-USB from Audio-Technica has great sound quality, and being a dynamic mic; generally picking up much less ambient noise than a condenser mic. Unlike many other options out at the time I made the purchase, it was also one of the few which supported both USB and XLR (Analog) usage. I specifically state analog because it is important to not that using the XLR interface on this mic bypasses the ADC (Anolog to Digital Converter) chip which is a 16-bit 44.1kHz/48kHz. Allowing you to use a higher quality Audio Interface, such as those offered by Alesis (I have and love the Alesis iO4 Audio Interface + Mixer)
But there was a huge problem when I connected this microphone to my computer. The volume with every setting turned all of the way up, was barely registering in all of my recordings.
The problem is a faulty default driver being installed by Microsoft Windows 7. We can simple tell windows to use a Generic USB Microphone driver, and everything is fixed. There is nothing to download, or install; this Generic USB Mic Driver comes with your Windows 7 installation.
That is all, maybe restart your computer for good measure.
