How to Fix ATR2100-USB Low Volume

The ATR2100-USB from Audio-Technica has great sound quality, and being a dynamic mic; generally picking up much less ambient noise than a condenser mic. Unlike many other options out at the time I made the purchase, it was also one of the few which supported both USB and XLR (Analog) usage. I specifically state analog because it is important to not that using the XLR interface on this mic bypasses the ADC (Anolog to Digital Converter) chip which is a 16-bit 44.1kHz/48kHz. Allowing you to use a higher quality Audio Interface, such as those offered by Alesis (I have and love the Alesis iO4 Audio Interface + Mixer)

But there was a huge problem when I connected this microphone to my computer. The volume with every setting turned all of the way up, was barely registering in all of my recordings.

The Low Volume Fix.

The problem is a faulty default driver being installed by Microsoft Windows 7. We can simple tell windows to use a Generic USB Microphone driver, and everything is fixed. There is nothing to download, or install; this Generic USB Mic Driver comes with your Windows 7 installation.

Step by Step Instructions, To fix ATR2100-USB Low Record Volume.

  • After pressing the [Windows] or [Command] buttons on your keyboard or Clicking the Start Icon in your Taskbar
  • Type 'Device Manager' in the start menu search
  • Find the ATR USB Device Driver located in the Universal Serial Bus controllers group
  • Right Click on the Driver and select this Update Driver Option
  • When asked for to Search or Browse for a Driver, select the Browse my computer for driver software option
  • Instead of actually browsing your filesystem, Click the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer option.
  • Select the Generic USB driver from the list.

That is all, maybe restart your computer for good measure.
